Chester City Passion Play returns in 2027!

Chester Passion Play March 2027Chester Passion Play

Churches and community partners across Chester are preparing for the return of the Chester City Passion, which will take place in the city centre on Good Friday, 26 March 2027.

Following a five-year gap, the much-loved outdoor retelling of the Easter story is expected to draw crowds once again, with thousands gathering to witness a moving, immersive portrayal of the final moments of Jesus’ life.

The production will unfold across key locations in the city centre, inviting audiences to journey through the story – from the Last Supper on the Rows, to Jesus’ arrest at Chester Cross, and the crucifixion at the West Door of Chester Cathedral.

Featuring a roving cast of community actors, singers, and musicians, the performance offers a powerful and accessible way for people of all backgrounds to engage with the Easter story in the heart of the city.

The Chester City Passion is delivered in partnership between Chester Mystery Plays, Churches Together in the City Centre, Theatre in the Quarter, and Link Up, under the artistic direction of Matt Baker.

As preparations gather pace, the organisers are inviting churches across the city and region to play their part, by supporting in prayer, promotion, and encouraging participation from local congregations.

Alongside applications to national and local funding bodies, there is also a particular encouragement for churches to consider making a financial contribution towards the costs of staging the event, whether in 2026 or 2027.
